Is Cambridge IGCSE harder than Edexcel IGCSE?

Neither board is harder than the other in terms of academic content or university recognition. The real difference is how each board structures assessment and grading.

Cambridge IGCSE uses an A* to G letter scale and a fully linear format. All exams are sat at the end of the course, typically in May or June of Year 11. There is no option to carry forward unit grades. Resitting means retaking the full subject.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE uses a 9 to 1 numerical scale. From 2026, Edexcel is introducing a formal modular route for international schools. Students can sit assessed units at different points in the course and resit individual units rather than the entire subject. This can reduce pressure for students who find a single high-stakes exam window difficult.

Global universities treat the two qualifications as identical. UK, US, UAE, and Gulf university admissions teams do not distinguish between Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel at this level. What matters is the grade achieved, not the board that issued it.

The choice usually comes down to two practical factors. First, which board your child's school offers, since switching mid-course is not feasible. Second, whether your child performs better under one extended revision period (linear) or benefits from spreading assessed work across the course (modular).

These are the main structural differences at a glance:

  • Cambridge: A* to G grading, fully linear
  • Edexcel: 9 to 1 grading, linear or modular from 2026
  • Both: equal university recognition worldwide
  • Resits: Cambridge requires full subject retake; Edexcel allows unit resits

If your child is preparing for either board, personalised support matters. Talimat's tutors are experienced with Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel, and can build revision plans tailored to the specific board and subject combination. After IGCSE, students typically progress to A-Levels or the IB, and the board used at IGCSE rarely restricts those options.
