Should I take IB Maths AA or AI for my university course?

Your university destination should drive the decision, not perceived difficulty or peer pressure.
Analysis and Approaches (AA) focuses on abstract algebra, formal proofs, and calculus without a calculator in Paper 1. Most competitive engineering, physics, and pure computer science programmes require AA HL specifically. Imperial College London, ETH Zurich, and leading US technical institutes list it explicitly in their entry requirements.
Applications and Interpretation (AI) is technology-forward. Calculators are permitted in every paper, and the course centres on statistical modelling, matrices, and real-world data interpretation. It suits students heading into business, economics, psychology, or data science.
The level matters as much as the course name. Some universities accept AI HL but not AA SL, because the HL content is deeper. Always cross-reference both the course name and the level against each target university's requirements before you finalise your subjects.
A common mistake is choosing based on what seems easier. At HL, both courses demand serious preparation. Scoring a 7 in AI HL will not satisfy an engineering programme that requires AA HL. The wrong course closes doors, regardless of the grade.
The internal assessment is worth 20% of your final grade in both courses. AA explorations reward algebraic or calculus-based investigations; AI explorations suit data collection and statistical modelling, which connects naturally to subjects like psychology or geography.
These are the subject groups where each course fits best:
- AA HL: engineering, physics, pure mathematics, computer science
- AA SL: sciences, pre-medicine, mixed STEM programmes
- AI HL: economics, data science, business analytics
- AI SL: social sciences, humanities, geography
If you are unsure which path fits your ambitions, IB tutoring with a subject specialist can help you map your choices against specific university requirements before your IB journey begins.
