Does IB HL Chemistry or A-Level Chemistry give you a better chance at university?

Neither automatically gives you a better chance. Your grade and target destination matter far more than which board issued the certificate.

For UK Russell Group universities, A-Level Chemistry requires a Grade A or A*. IB Higher Level Chemistry requires a 6 or 7. Standard Level Chemistry is not accepted as a substitute at selective institutions, including for medicine or chemical engineering.

For UAE medical programmes, A-Level applicants typically need a minimum Grade B in Chemistry, Biology, and a third science subject. IB applicants need at least a 5 at HL Chemistry, plus an overall Diploma score of 32 or above. The UAE Ministry of Education equivalency process also requires a full IB Diploma, not individual certificates.

For Oxbridge, A-Level applicants need A*AA or A*A*A depending on the programme. IB applicants need 39 to 42 points overall with 7s at HL. Chemistry at HL with a score of 7 is effectively required for both Oxford and Cambridge science entry.

One practical difference involves university credit. Many US universities award course exemptions for IB HL scores of 6 or 7, allowing students to skip first-year general chemistry. Cambridge A-Levels do not generate the same formal credit exemptions in the US system, though strong A-Level grades do support placement into advanced modules.

These are the key differences between the two pathways:

  • A-Levels: deeper specialisation, terminal exams, favoured by UK and UAE universities
  • IB HL: broader Diploma, internal assessment worth 20%, valued across US and European institutions
  • IB SL: not accepted as equivalent to A-Level at selective programmes
  • Credit transfer: IB HL scores of 6 or 7 unlock US course exemptions; A-Levels do not
  • UAE equivalency: full IB Diploma required; partial certificates are not accepted

Whether you are taking Cambridge A-Levels or the IB Diploma, the differentiator at admissions is almost always the grade achieved. Our blog covers Oxbridge thresholds, UAE equivalency steps, and US credit policies in full.
