Do you need an A in A-Level Chemistry to get into medical school?

Yes, a grade A in A-Level Chemistry is the standard minimum at most competitive medical schools worldwide.
UK Russell Group universities typically set the bar at A*AA or AAA at A-Level, with Chemistry almost always one of the required subjects. A sub-par chemistry result will close off most of these programmes, regardless of how strong your other grades are.
UAE medical colleges generally require a minimum A or B in A-Level Chemistry. The most selective UAE programmes expect grades at the top of that range. Students applying through Cambridge A-Levels or Pearson Edexcel are well-positioned, provided their equivalency documentation from the Ministry of Education is in order.
US pre-med routes work differently. Students complete an undergraduate degree first, then apply to medical school. However, A-Level Chemistry still acts as an academic benchmark for US university admission at the undergraduate stage, where it is assessed alongside SAT scores and diploma records.
A strong grade alone is not always enough. These additional requirements apply in parallel at most destinations:
- High UCAT score for UK Russell Group routes
- Ministry of Education equivalency certificate for UAE
- SAT scores and diploma records for US pathways
- Biology A-Level, commonly required or preferred in the UK
The chemistry topics that matter most for medicine include organic reaction mechanisms, acid-base equilibria, quantitative mole calculations, and biochemical structures. Exam boards including AQA and Edexcel each structure these topics slightly differently, so knowing your specific mark scheme is as important as knowing the content.
A-Level tutoring with a subject-specialist who understands medical school requirements is one of the most effective ways to close a grade gap before the application cycle begins. Building strong foundations through IGCSE tutoring in earlier years also prepares students for the volume and rigour of A-Level Chemistry content.
