Cambridge students typically work 40 to 50 hours per week across all academic activity.

The workload breaks down into three main areas. Lectures and seminars take around 8 to 12 hours weekly. Supervisions, which are small-group or one-to-one teaching sessions, add another 1 to 3 hours. The rest is independent reading, essay writing, and problem-set work.

Supervisions are the defining feature of Cambridge study. Students usually have one or two per subject per week, each requiring several hours of preparation. You write an essay or complete a problem set, then defend your thinking in front of a supervisor. The ratio is typically 1 to 3 students per supervisor.

Science and engineering students often have lab sessions on top of this, which can push total hours closer to 50 per week, especially during term.

The academic terms at Cambridge are short, just eight weeks each, so the pace is intense. There is very little downtime between deadlines. This makes good time management essential from the first week.

Students who struggle with the volume of work can access university counselling services and disability support. Mitigating circumstances processes exist for those dealing with chronic illness or personal difficulties.

This culture of academic autonomy and self-directed study starts well before university. Students who arrive having studied a structured British curriculum, including Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge A-Levels, tend to adjust more smoothly. They are already familiar with extended writing, independent research, and working to external exam board standards.
