Both Oxford and Cambridge offer structured support for students with physical disabilities through dedicated disability advisory services.
At Oxford, the Disability Advisory Service works with students to arrange reasonable adjustments. These can include accessible rooms in college, adapted exam conditions, and support with transport across campus. Students can register before they arrive, which helps avoid delays at the start of term.
Cambridge operates a similar service through its Disability Resource Centre. Advisers there help students access adjustments at a faculty and department level, including adapted seating, specialised equipment, and note-taking support. Cambridge supervisions (the one-to-one teaching sessions central to the Cambridge curriculum) can also be adjusted in format where needed.
Both universities have formal mitigating circumstances processes. If a physical disability causes disruption during term, students can submit evidence for consideration by their department. This can affect deadlines, exams, or assessed work.
Here are some of the common adjustments available at both institutions:
- Accessible accommodation on or near college grounds
- Extra time or rest breaks in exams
- Assistive technology loans
- Personal care coordination support
- Remote or adapted teaching arrangements
Arranging support early matters. Both universities advise declaring a disability at application or as soon as a diagnosis is confirmed. Late disclosure can slow down the process of getting the right provisions in place.
For younger students preparing for the academic rigour of Oxbridge, building strong independent study habits at secondary level is a real advantage. The Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels both develop the kind of self-directed learning that Oxbridge expects.
