Should I do maths past papers timed or untimed?

Use both timed and untimed conditions, but in a deliberate order.
Begin with untimed, open-note practice. Pull questions on a single topic and work through them slowly. The goal is to spot which formulae or method steps you have not fully learned yet.
Once you have covered the main topic areas, switch to full timed sittings under strict closed-book conditions. No phone, no pausing, exact paper duration. This trains your brain to pace itself and sustain focus across the full exam.
A three-phase structure works well for Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels students.
- Phase One: untimed, notes open, topic by topic
- Phase Two: timed, closed book, full paper
- Phase Three: mark scheme review, error logging
Phase Three is the step most students skip. The official mark scheme shows the exact method steps and keywords examiners reward. Reading it carefully after every sitting tells you far more than your raw score does.
Timed practice matters most for building what you might call exam endurance. Concentration tends to drop in the final third of a paper, and that is where preventable marks are lost. Sitting through several timed papers before exam day conditions you to stay sharp throughout.
For Edexcel past exam practice or Cambridge A-Level papers, pay attention to the mark allocation per question. A one-mark question does not deserve five minutes. Timed practice teaches proportional time allocation, and that skill alone can add several marks on the day.
A realistic target for most students is five to eight full timed papers, alongside topical question sets for every major topic area. Use the most recent five years of papers first, as these best reflect current examiner style.
