What is the minimum number of IGCSE subjects required in the UAE?

UAE students need at least five IGCSE subjects to satisfy the Ministry of Education equivalency rules.
Those five subjects cannot be chosen freely. Mathematics and English Language are compulsory for almost every student. Arab nationals and Muslim expat students must also include Arabic Language and Islamic Studies to meet equivalency conditions.
Five subjects is the local baseline, but it is not enough for competitive university applications. Most strong UK and international universities reviewing Cambridge IGCSE transcripts expect seven to nine subjects as evidence of a broad secondary education.
These are the typical expectations by destination:
- UAE MoE equivalency: five subjects minimum
- Mid-tier UK universities: seven to eight subjects
- Russell Group universities: eight to nine subjects, mostly A and A star grades
Taking ten or more subjects rarely helps. Students who overload their timetable often arrive at A-Levels with lower grades and less confidence than peers who chose seven or eight subjects and excelled in each one.
The quality-first rule is clear: seven strong grades will open more doors than eleven inconsistent ones. Admissions teams know the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum well. They can tell the difference between a student who planned carefully and one who simply added subjects.
When building a subject list, start with the non-negotiables: Mathematics, English Language, and any subjects required by the UAE MoE for your child's nationality and religion. Then add subjects that align with intended A-Levels and target degree programmes. A student planning to study Medicine in the UK, for example, needs solid IGCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics before considering any optional additions.
For most UAE students, seven to nine subjects is the practical sweet spot. It meets both local and international expectations, leaves room to perform at the highest level, and builds a solid foundation for the subjects ahead.
