Algebra and geometry are the two domains that carry the most marks in IGCSE maths, so they deserve the most revision time.
Both Cambridge IGCSE (0580) and Edexcel (4MA1) test broadly the same content areas: number, algebra, geometry, and statistics. The Cambridge syllabus weights algebra and graphs at around 30% and geometry at around 25%, giving those two domains a combined share of roughly 55% of your total marks.
These topics appear on almost every past paper across both boards:
- Simultaneous equations and quadratic factorisation
- Circle theorems and their proofs
- Trigonometry: sine rule, cosine rule, area formula
- Cumulative frequency and histograms
- Probability trees and combined events
- Standard form, surds, and index laws
Starting with these topics gives you the fastest route to a grade improvement. Students who work on high-yield areas first consistently outperform those who revise the syllabus in order.
The formula sheet provided in each exam is limited. Many results, including area formulae and circle theorems, are not given. Treat the sheet as a safety net and memorise what the board does not provide.
Showing clear working matters too. IGCSE mark schemes award method marks even when the final answer is wrong. Never leave a question blank; always write your steps and state any formula you use.
If you are sitting Cambridge IGCSE, all papers allow a calculator. If you are on Edexcel, Paper 1 is non-calculator, so practising without one is essential.
