The highest-mark topics in IGCSE Geography are tectonic hazards, urbanisation, river landforms, economic development, energy, and migration.

Both Cambridge IGCSE (syllabus 0460) and Edexcel IGCSE Geography divide content between physical and human geography, with equal weighting across both. Examiners reward named places and precise statistics, not general statements.

Case studies are the core of every high-scoring answer. These are the topic areas that carry the most case study marks.

  • Tectonic hazards: a named earthquake or eruption with death tolls and response data
  • Urbanisation: a rapidly growing named city with population figures
  • River landforms: a named river with specific landform examples
  • Energy: a named renewable project with output figures
  • Migration: a named flow with push and pull factors
  • Economic development: a named country with HDI or GNI data

For students in the Gulf, Dubai's urbanisation story works well. The city grew from under 300,000 people in 1980 to over 3.5 million today, driven by economic migration and government investment. That level of detail is exactly what Cambridge and Edexcel reward.

Map skills also carry significant marks, particularly in Cambridge's dedicated skills paper. Grid references, contour interpretation, scale calculations, and cross-section drawing are all tested. Students who treat map work as an afterthought regularly lose easy marks.

Command words matter just as much as content. Describe, explain, and evaluate each require a different type of response. Mixing them up is one of the most common ways students lose marks, even when their geographic knowledge is strong.

Online tutoring can help students practise timed answers and work through examiner reports, which Cambridge publishes after each series and which clearly show where candidates lost marks. These reports are free and are one of the most useful revision tools available.
