How much harder is A Level than IGCSE?

A Levels are substantially harder than Cambridge IGCSE, and the gap is bigger than most students expect.

At IGCSE, students typically sit 8 to 10 subjects. At A Level, that drops to 3 or 4. But fewer subjects does not mean less work. Each A Level demands far more depth, independent study, and critical thinking than any IGCSE course did.

The assessment style changes completely. IGCSE mark schemes reward accurate recall and structured answers. A Level mark schemes reward original analysis, nuanced argument, and the ability to evaluate conflicting evidence. Students who coasted through IGCSE on past papers and memory often find Year 12 disorienting at first.

The content volume increases sharply too. In A Level Mathematics, the content is roughly double that of IGCSE, covering proof, integration, and statistical modelling. In A Level Chemistry, students move from surface-level principles to explaining full reaction mechanisms in extended written responses.

Study habits must change as well. These are the approaches that separate students who thrive from those who struggle:

  • Daily review cycles, not end-of-term cramming
  • Timed essay practice from Term 1
  • Active note synthesis, not passive highlighting
  • Building an evidence bank for essay subjects early

For UAE students, it is also worth knowing that the UAE Ministry of Education recognises A Levels for Grade 12 equivalency. The standard requirement is at least one full A Level or two AS Levels at a qualifying grade. Three A Levels is the normal route; taking four is only advisable if a student is genuinely strong across all four subjects.

A-Level tutoring can make a real difference during this transition, particularly if support begins in the summer before Year 12. Talimat matches students to subject-specialist tutors in under ten minutes, covering every major exam board including Cambridge A-Levels and Edexcel.
