What A-Level grades do you need for UK, US, and UAE universities?

A-Level grade requirements differ significantly depending on whether you are applying to the UK, US, or UAE.

For UK universities, three full A-Levels are the standard expectation. Russell Group institutions set offers ranging from AAB to A*A*A. High-demand courses such as Medicine and Engineering also specify which subjects must be included, not just the grades.

US colleges treat A-Levels as one part of a broader application. Grades matter, but they sit alongside essays, references, and test scores. Strong A-Level results, typically an A or A*, can also earn advanced course credit at many American universities, saving time and fees.

In the UAE, requirements vary between local institutions and international branch campuses. The Ministry of Education equivalency certificate is a baseline requirement for most UAE university admissions. English language scores, either IELTS or EmSAT, are also required at most institutions.

These institutions publish the following indicative baselines for A-Level applicants:

  • American University of Sharjah: two A-Levels or three AS-Levels at Grade B
  • University of Birmingham Dubai: three full A-Levels, matching UK criteria
  • Khalifa University: minimum CCC, with a focus on science subjects
  • Heriot-Watt Dubai: three passes, plus Ministry equivalency certificates

AS-Levels are rarely sufficient on their own. UK universities moved to linear A-Levels in 2015 and will not accept AS-Levels in place of full qualifications. US selective universities treat AS-Levels as less rigorous than full A-Levels.

Three strong A-Level grades consistently outperform four weaker ones. Admissions teams recognise grade dilution quickly. Only take a fourth subject if you can perform well in all four.
